Welcome to the Klahoose First Nation Language page. We are one of three most northern Coast Salish nations. ƛohos (Klahoose) means a sculpin fish. Our traditional territory extends from Toba Inlet, Desolation Sound, some islands in the northern Strait of Georgia. Our permanent community resides in Squirrel Cove, on the east side of Cortes Island, BC. Our community was established in around the time the church was built in 1896.The population of ƛohos is 300, and about 35 - 40 members live in the community. The rest live in varioius places in BC such as Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, Vancouver, as well as other places around Canada and in the United States.We are part of the Coast Salish Langauge group, our dialect is ʔayʔǰuθəm. Which is the same language spoken by the Sliammon and Homalco first nations.
